Answer Question

Ceylon which is present day Sri Lanka can be traced back to the sixth century. Back then Cosmas Indicopleustes a Greek sailor called the island Sielen Diva or the island of Sielen. From this name Sielen the different forms of the name Ceylon took root, weather it was the English Ceylon or the Spanish Celian, French Selon, Dutch Zeilan, Latin Selan etc.

Ceylon was in use before 1972 as the name for the island of Sri Lanka. The official name of the country is the "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka". It is a tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean just south of West of India's state of Tamil Nadu.

The current name comes from the ancient language of Sanskrit. Sri Lanka means "resplendent island". The name is the same found in the Hindu scriptures of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.
