In Fiction, What Is Canon?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Canon is events, characters and places that are genuine and involved in the original work.

Canon is the opposite of fanon. Characters in fanon are portrayed in a different way to how they are in canon i.e. the original work. In forums, fans may use the words 'fanon' or 'canon', along with a character's name in order to state which type they are referring to. In other words, if a fan was discussing the Harry Potter series in a forum, and they were talking about the characters, then they may write 'canon!Harry' to describe Harry's personality in the books, or 'fanon!Harry' to describe how Harry is portrayed in fanon, such as in fanfiction.

Canon and fanon can sometimes become intermingled, with confusion as to what's happened in the original works and what hasn't.

Work that is non-canon usually appears in spin-offs, adaptations and other unofficial media.
