Electric train is basically a train which is powered by electricity from an external source. It can run by using overhead lines, third rail or even board electricity storage devices such as battery or a flywheel system.

The first electric locomotive was built by Robert Davidson in the year 1837. It was powered by Galvanic cell batteries. He later built a larger locomotive called Galvani. It was exhibited in the year 1841 at the Royal Scottish Society of Arts.

However, the first electric train was presented in the year 1879 in Berlin. It has limited electric powered batteries so it could not be used on commercial basis. Then electric trolleys were used in 1888 on Richmond Union Passenger Railway, In the year 1890, electric trains were used in City and South London Railway underground line in UK. These trains were designed by Mather and Platt.
