What Is The Origin Of The Word Hormones?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word 'hormones' is derived from the Ancient Greek 'hormon' (a present participle form), meaning "to urge on", which in turn is derived from 'horme', meaning "impulse". So essentially, hormones are things that urge you on :-)  Going back a bit further, these Greek words are thought to be related to the Proto Indo-European root 'er-', meaning "to move, set in motion".
