What Happened In The 1828 Presidential Elections In The United States?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

According to the precedent set by the first President of the United States George Washington, each president could serve two terms as president of the United States, each of which would last for a period of four years.  The newly elected president John Quincy Adams, who had been elected as the United States President by the House of Representatives, was also looking forward to serving his next term as president nevertheless his unpopularity with Congress was becoming a hindrance for him.

Another factor that was abating his chances was the immense popularity of  his rival candidate Andrew Jackson who was the hero of the 1812 war.  So the two main candidates for the 1828 presidential elections were John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.  It was soon after that Jackson along with his supporters and followers made a new party out of the Republican party, which was called the Democratic party and eventually beat Adams in the presidential elections thus becoming the next president of the United States.
