Is It Really True That It Can Rain Fish?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Not only have there been documented reports of raining fish but also raining frogs and such strange items as tomatoes and lumps of coal.

The simple explanation is that strong winds in thunderstorms can form small whirlwinds or little tornadoes. When these touch down over water they can suck up not only more moisture but also anything else in the pond as well! This debris (including those fish and frogs) can be carried for many miles before the spiral winds break down and there you have it – raining fish. Why even the Bible, the Book of Exodus refers to a plague of frogs.

Fish can't get very far on dry land but frogs have been reported to, albeit startled, simply hop away. Then there have been the instances when the animals rise so high into the atmosphere that they are frozen solid when they hit the ground! Thank goodness the expression "it's raining cats and dogs" is just that.
