How Can I Find Out How Old My House Is, Or If Anything Historical May Have Occurred Here?

Answer Question

You can go to your local courthouse to conduct a search of the deed in their archives for yourself, or you can hire a title company to do it for you. If you go to the courthouse, generally there is not a charge unless you want copies. As far as anything historical, I would turn to my local library. Once again, "free" comes to mind .

That's okay, Good Luck! Something I forgot. You should have a copy of the title work in with your mortgage documents that you signed when you purchased your home. The title should have information in it and the appraisal (which you should also have a copy of will give you either an approximation of age, or the actual age) of your home. That information should be in the middle of the first page.

One way you can find out when some houses were built is to look under the toilet seat lid at the date stamped into it.  Toilet fixtures rarely sit in warehouses very long, so the manufacturing date is usually within a year of when the toilet was installed.   If it's the original toilet, the date is pretty close.

Of course, if the bathroom has been remodeled or the toilet has been replaced, that won't help tell you when the house was built.  And anything else you find in a toilet rarely has any historical value.
