A Modem is a device that is used to modulate an analog carrier signal in order to encode digital information. It also demodulatres these signals to decode the transmitted information. A cable Modem is a kind of modem that is used to provide access to a data signal that is sent over a cable television network. They are used for broad band internet access. On the other hand a Null Modem is a communication mode whereby two DTE's (Computer or a terminal) are connected to each other using a RS-232 serial cable.
