I would like to tell you my perception of Pranayama in layman's terms and it goes as follows:
Pranayama is the art of regulating ones own breathing. It is universally known that quantity of absorption of oxygen in our lungs has a great effect on mental and physical systems of a person. It is also known that in these days, there are various factors which induce stress in your mind. In general stress is caused when the aspirations of a person does not materialize. In other words, more the gap between aspirations, more the stress involved. The aspirations are caused by the five inputs to our brain through five sensory organs called Panchendriyas in Sanskrit (Eyes, Ears, Mouth, Nose and Skin) in the human body. You cannot help but have inputs because your sensory organs are always exposed to the outside world. But the stress is caused by the reaction of our brain to these inputs. Your brain should be able to filter the inputs and reject the unneeded ones. This requires a very calm and collected state of awareness.

    Pranayama helps in two ways:
    1. For the period you are doing Pranayama, your total attention is on observing your breath and over a period of practice, you are not aware of what is happening around you. This means you are giving that compulsory rest to your brain and not allowing it to do monkey business, if I may call it so.
    2. Controlled breathing in Pranayama helps in better absorption of oxygen into the blood stream. A better absorption of oxygen will help to have a healthy mind in a healthy body. It has a positive effect on both the mental and physical state of a person.
Lastly, what you do while doing Pranayama is to observe your breath without being aware that you are breathing. Over a period of time, your mind gets so used to observing things without reacting. This is precisely what is needed to avoid stress.

Hope my views are of some help to you. Good Luck.

Pranayama is the fundamental breathing practices mentioned in Vedic Yoga that regulates the in and out flow of life force. The term is coined from Sanskrit word combined with prana (life force) and yama (regulate). In spiritual aspect, it is the process that consciously creates the sustainability of a specific upward and downward flow of Cosmological life force all the way through the cerebrospinal channel.

A regular breathing practice through pranayama induces a perfect homeostasis in both the physiological as well as psychological health system. In addition to that, it aids in increasing the life expectancy. It works enhancing the cognitive restructuring of an individual. Pranayama has the ability to affect almost all the body parts in an effective manner, which eventually helps the body to get rid off any kind of complications.

In spiritual sense, pranayama helps in rejuvenating the spiritual energy which in turn enables an individual to experience spiritual joy, happiness and serenity.
