If we are required to change password of our login in Linux, we must use command. Before changing password of our login we must get connected to the remote server first.  After getting connected, we will log in with that user name whose password we are going to change by linux command.  After typing the command we will be asked for our new password. After writing our new password there, we will be asked for confirming our password. After confirming the password we will get back into the shell. The password will be changed immediately and the previous password that we had used to log in to the system will be changed. In simple and easy words what we have to do is just to follow the instructions displayed on our screen after giving command . On thing we must always remember that those passwords must not be selected which are easy to guess. This is due to the security purposes. Some numeric values can also be used in passwords or lower and upper cases can be used to make our passwords, in fact, our logins secure and safe. Another important thing about this command is that it is never used to recover our lost passwords; it is only helpful to change passwords.

Just login with your current password. Type the command password. It will ask your current password and then new password, re-type new password. Just enter your new password. It gets updated

The password command is passwd, not the whole word password.  Perhaps different flavors of linux vary though.

type passwd and you're prompted twice for the new password.  Done
