Xerostomia is otherwise known as dry mouth and it usually causes you to have either thicker saliva or not as much saliva as you usually would. There are various different causes of the condition including certain medications, anaemia or diabetes, dehydration or even tumours. The list is endless and obviously it depends upon individual circumstances as to what causes your Xerostomia. Smoking is another common cause as is breathing in poor quality air.
Generally speaking the condition can be quite frustrating and the lack of saliva can cause many problems. This is due to the fact that good saliva is used to wash away food and plaque which helps to prevent decay, it lubricates our food making it easier to swallow and it provides enzymes which help our digestive system. You will know if you have Xerostomia if you constantly seem to have a dry mouth and you find it hard swallowing things.
