Junk mail is the result of direct marketing, a form of advertisement used by many companies to send their message across to millions of people at one time. Their target is to push people to buy their products or services.

Direct marketing, as the name suggests is done to match you and your buying preferences. The aim is to convince you to buy their products.

Whenever some one buys a product or service and gives their personal information to the company, there is a huge chance of that person receiving junk mail and that person will be added on to a mailing list. Whenever you fill out any sort of product registration form, use your credit card for shopping or dining, subscribe to a magazine then you are added to a mailing list. That is why all kinds of junk mail start bombarding your mail box.

The moment a person gives their address, name, email address and phone number, they are added on to a data base, which starts sending out automatic promotions and newsletter. This data base is usually sold to other businesses as well, with whom you had no contact at all, since they get huge amounts of money for it.
