Where Are The Protons And Neutrons In A Magnesium Atom?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Magnesium is a chemical element with symbol Mg. The atomic number of magnesium is 12. Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and its atomic mass is 24. Magnesium is placed in the second group and third period of the periodic table. The valence electrons are present in s orbital of magnesium atom so, it lies in s-block of periodic table.

The atomic number of an atom represents the number of protons in an atom and the atomic mass represents the sum of number of neutrons and number of proton in an atom.

Atomic number of magnesium = number of protons = 12

Atomic mass = 24 = number of protons + number of neutrons

    Number of neutrons = 24 - 12 = 12
