OMG....You never took it to the vet to see why it was bleeding, that was cruel but to should ask a vet what type illness could cause this to happen to a dog......the best to you

Only a vet that performs a necropsy (autopsy for animals) can determine why this occurred. Blood loss will kill an animal the same as it would for a human.
I hope your vet got to see him before he died to figure out what was going wrong, but it doesn't sound like it. There are many reasons why that could have occurred, but only a necropsy can determine it for sure.
