Is Laila Ali Still Boxing?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Laila Ali is the daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. She is still boxing, and is the current multi-world champion, having won the IBA super middleweight, WIBA, IWBF and IBA championship titles. She made her debut as a professional women's boxer against April Fowler at the Turning Stone Casino Convention Centre on the Oneida Indian Nation in Verona, New York on October 8, 1999. Fowler was obviously no match for the daughter of the world's most famous boxer. But Laila, who is pretty much a chip of the old block as far as her attitude is concerned, made the headlines twice in the same bout. First she insisted that the press must not cover the fight, and then she gained international exposure for becoming the first boxer to enter the ring with no previous experience in kickboxing at all.

Her father made an appearance at the venue and stole the show. Her planned professional debut, which was slated to take place in March 1999, did not take place. Critics have repeatedly said that Laila's lineage takes the focus off her own talent and it is due to this, more than anything else, that she is able to subdue her lesser-known opponents.
