How Can I Make My Dog Feel Secure, So She Doesn't Howl When She Is Left Alone?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Some dogs have separation anxiety when left alone. In such cases it is normal for the dog to howl or behave in an erratic manner. This may happen with dogs that are new to a household and are unfamiliar with the home environment. One has to gradually train the dog to be by itself before it is completely left alone over long periods of time. You may at first try to keep it in one of the rooms such that it can have an occasional glimpse of you every now and then. You may also give it certain toys of its liking to keep it occupied. When it gets used to this, you may try to leave it alone for a few hours at one time. Slowly it will get used to being by itself.
If the above technique does not work, then it should be taken to an animal behaviorist and advise should be sought on how to train a dog for it not to suffer from separation anxiety.
