The Catholic Church has many teachings which back up its view on embryo research. The Church has a strong opinion on the sanctity of human life and the individuality of a human being, at whatever stage of its growth. It views that life should be protected from the moment of conception until natural death, or "from the womb to the tomb".
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, 'One must hold as licit procedures carried out on the human embryo which respect the life and integrity of the embryo and do not involve disproportionate risks for it, but are directed towards its healing, the improvement of its condition of health and its individual survival' (CCC.2275). Catholics oppose the view that 'the ends justifies the means' in relation to embryo research. The late Roman Catholic leader in Scotland, the late Cardinal Winning, pointed out that the ' end is good' but the ' means are immoral'.
