"New Moon" is the second novel in the "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer. It was published in September 2006.

"New Moon" begins with protagonist Bella Swan celebrating her eighteenth birthday. She is worried about being eighteen, as it will make her older than Edward Cullen, a vampire who is permanently seventeen and who she is in love with. During the party, she unwraps a birthday present and in the process receives a paper cut. As a result, Edward’s brother, Jasper, who is also a vampire, becomes tempted by the scent of blood and attempts to attack Bella.
Edward, who is worried that Bella will be harmed if she continues her relationship with him, tells her that he is no longer in love with her and leaves Forks, Washington, with his family in order to keep her safe. Bella is distraught and becomes depressed. She is comforted by Jacob Black, a family friend. They become close, but then Bella begins to hear Edward’s voice whenever she is in danger. So that she can hear Edward’s voice, Bella places herself in a number of dangerous situations.

Later, Bella discovers that Jacob is a werewolf. Bella finds herself in danger when Victoria, a vampire turns up. Victoria wishes to get her revenge for the death of James, a vampire who was her mate and who was killed by Edward and the Cullens. Bella is protected by Jacob and his pack of werewolves.

Bella attempts the dangerous task of cliff-diving in order to hear Edward’s voice. She is caught in a riptide and is rescued by Jacob. Edward’s sister, Alice, has a vision of Bella jumping off the cliff and goes to check on Bella’s father. Edward is then given incorrect information from his other sister, Roselie, who tells him that Bella has committed suicide. Distraught over the news, Edward goes to Italy to provoke a group a vampires known as the Volturi so that they will kill him. He is saved just in time by Bella and Alice. The Volturi inform Edward and Bella that Bella must either be killed or changed into a vampire as she is the only human who knows of their existence.

Edward returns to Forks with Bella and tells her that he never stopped loving her and that the reason he left was to keep her safe.

The novel ends with Edward’s family making the decision for Bella to be turned into a vampire after her graduation, despite Edward being against the idea.
