Go to dos prompt by pressing F8 when the computer starts. You will see lots of options. Click to the option "Ms Dos with command prompt only".

Format the drive where you have installed windows 98.
    Formatting command is

    format C:

If you have installed windows 98 in c drive.

After formatting, insert the windows xp cd and restart the computer. And click delete button at the start of computer, it will take you to bios options. When you are there, select the cd rom as first booting option. Now restart the computer. Your computer will now boot from the cd drive and will start the windows xp setup process.

    Follow the instructions.

Thanks to taimur for the information. I was successful with the un-install of windows 98SE and the installation of XP professional. But I chose to keep the fat 32 file system instead of choosing the NTSF file system during my installation of XP. Should I re-install XP and select the NTFS file system? I am working on My grandmothers HP Pavillion 6624F desktop to allow her internet access. The system has only 64MB of RAM. Will an upgrade of RAM also be needed to run XP properly for her use? She knows very little about computers, so I want to make the system as easy for her to use as possible, as she looks to buy an inexpensive new system next year. Thanks

First of all you need to un-install your windows 98 so that you can install xp easily. The basic method is to Boot from windows XP CD by going into CMOS setup that can be accessed by pressing F2 as soon as your computer stars.

Just boot your system with bootable Windows XP cd and format windows 98 from your computer. Now again reboot it with windows xp cd and follow up instructions on blue screen.

Make sure you copy all your important data to other drive before formatting or it will be lost completely.
