Kevin Keegan, the former Liverpool and Hamburg player took over the England job in February nineteen ninety nine and his appointment was met with much enthsiasm by pundits and fans a like.  After the passionless Hoddle, the previous manager, Keegan ws expected to breathe some much needed life and excitement into the squad, as he had at his previous clubs, Newcastle United in particular.

In all Keegan took charge of England for eighteen games, winning seven, drawing seven and losing four.  His final game in charge came at Wembley in October two thousand, when England went down by a single goal to nil at the hands of the German national team, condeming England to defeat in their last game at the old Wembley.

Keegen quit son after the game, with many of the pundits who had celebrated his appointment, suddenly first in the queue to criticise him, particuarly his tactical knowledge and his ability to stick at a job.
