That depends entirely upon what job you are currently doing at the moment.
Writing is needed in a number of careers but it is only mainly important in jobs such as journalism or freelance writing. In that case yes it is important to write in order to get a promotion. However you also have to have a skill so it would be worth taking a writing course if needed.
There are other jobs which require some amoutn of writing but mainly it is your spelling that the company will be worried about. As long as you can write and spell correctly that is all that matters. Usually when looking at promoting somebody, their writing is not the main reason they will get a promotion. You have to be smart, hard working and you have to show that you care and that you are good at your job. It is only then that you will be considered for a promotion.
