What Is A Difference Between Asynchronous Transmission Mode And Synchronous Transmission Mode?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Asynchronous transmission mode is (ATM) is a type of packet switching system which can support a wide range of different data types including computer data, voice, fax etc. In the ATM system packets of data are referrred to as cells.

Synchronous transmission mode is widely used in local area networks. There are timing signals that synchronise the transmission at the sending and recieving end so there is no need for start and stop bits for each character, only at the beginning and end of the whole block. This makes it possible to achieve higher transfer rates.
