Can You Suggest Any Positive Responses To Provocative Honks Or Hand Gestures, To Diminish Road Rage?

When someone honks at me, assumingly because I am doing or did something while driving that angered them, I give them a great big smile and friendly wave, like as if I knew them. This generally works, but I have been told that you should not respond at all.

It's hard to know what to do these days. No response may make some even angrier while a smile and wave may set others off more.  Maybe the best thing to do is wave a white flaf of surrender of put our hands up ... Or have a bumper sticker that says.. Insured by smith and wesson.. Who knows anymore.. I usually smile a sheepish apologetic smile and look for muzzle flash.. Haha

Duck and cover position  taking your hands off the wheel slamming the breaks and bracing for impact, then look up bewildered and hope your insane reaction makes them scared of you and they smile and wave as if it were there fault.  LOL

I would not respond at all considering people hate to be ignored. My mom likes to join in and give them her middle finger, and on good days she'll smile and wave as if she knew them same as you. Each person responds differently and to be honest just about any you could respond could anger them further.

Good pt. And not funny. I did pull my car to a stop on a deserted highway, to tell the teenage girl behind me to keep a decent distance, since i did slow down move, to the right so she could pass and she didn't. I could not see her headlights she was so close. She locked her car and slunk way down in the seat of the really fine Camero she was driving. Which I thought was kind of funny. I was telling her for both our sakes, but often people are intimidated by me, go figure! LOL

LOL...I also try the friendly smile tactic.  It works in most cases.  Sometimes my middle finger gets sort of spastic and I have to keep it under control, especially if you remember how many people get killed from road rage.  Sometimes just making eye contact is enough for some people to shoot you!
