What Is The Chinese Firewall?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The great firewall of China is what the the "Golden Shield" project is better known as outside mainland China. The name refers to its function as a network firewall as well as to the Great Wall of China. It is an attempt by the Chinese government to control what information is available to the people over the Internet. When cetrain websites are requested, the system can selectively engage in DNS poisoning. However, systematic examination of Internet content does not seem to be undertaken as it is technically impractical. For different sites, there are different levels of censorship. Websites which are blacklisted, like non-Chinese versions of Google, are more strictly censored. It also blocks the search results for certain words on the Chinese search engines. On the other hand, websites like CNN are completely blocked in China. However, there are holes in the system and many have claimed to have bypassed the Chinese firewall.
