Puppies may sleep anywhere from 15 to 20 hours a day or even more. In fact they should sleep for many hours and at regular times during the day. This helps in their normal growth and development. The owner should make them go to sleep early and, likewise, make them get up early. Puppies should be exposed to the sweet early morning air for healthy growth.

A puppy sleeping for long hours is a normal part of its routine and not a cause for concern. The required amount of sleep would depend on their age and the environment in which the puppy will grow. Newborns will sleep more than older ones. If there are other pets and children in the house they may sleep a little less.

However, one should watch out for other clinical signs such as vomiting or diarrhea and not wanting to eat, if such signs are absent, one should not worry about the sleeping. The puppy is just a baby and just like human infants they may sleep as much as 20 hours a day and as it grows older it would be more active and playful.

Depending on the age and activity level of your puppy, they can sleep 12 hrs or even more. The question that I have is when the puppy is awake, is it alert? Does it want to play and to follow you? Are it's eyes bright? Can it follow ( track ) objects?? Does it want to eat and urinate? Does it have regular bowel movements? If the puppy is active in its waking hours, everything should be okay. Make sure you have regular vet visits and make sure that you tell the vet any concerns that you have. As your puppy grows, it will spend more time being awake. Hope this helped.

Puppies sleep a lot in order for their bodies to grow so don't worry about it too much also shih tzus are a low energy breed anyway. If your still worried then take your pup for a check up at the vets.

My Boxer is almost 2 years old and she still spends half of her life sleeping. It's really normal. Puppies should sleep a lot but there should also be some play time in there to strengthen her/him up before it fully grows.
Thank you =]

Puppies should get at least 6 hours of sleep a day. But it depends on what type of breed they are. If they are hounds, they may be more playful and sleep less. If they are dachshunds, they may sleep a lot.

Puppies will sleep a lot right now because they are growing, So let him sleep. Also give him lots of his own toy's to play with to keep him busy. Throw a tennis ball for him a lot so that he will run and play.

Most experts agree that we should all get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night (or day).

24 hours a day.  Trust me.  I am a world-class Shih-Tzu breeder who breeds Shih-Tzus for competitions.  If your puppy won't sleep the full 24 hours, force him to sleep using a mixture of dog food and vodka.
