What Is The Child Abuse Prevention And Treatment Act Of 1974?

The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974 is an American act which provides the states with sufficient funds in order to carry out the activities of prevention, assessment, investigation, prosecution and treatment. This act is abbreviated as the CAPTA.

The CAPTA provides grants to organisations in the public sector, non-governmental agencies, non-profit organisations and charitable institutions to conduct programmes and projects aimed at creating public awareness and organise demonstrations in public.

The CAPTA identifies the role of the states in supporting the activities of research and development, evaluation, technical assistance and collection of data. It has set up Offices on Child Abuse and Neglect, and governs the functioning of the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information.

Additionally, the CAPTA has also provided a standard set of rules to be followed while dealing with cases of neglected and abused children and defined the terms child abuse and neglect.
