What Is A Van As Far As An Insurance Company Is Concerned?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Generally, a van is considered to be a vehicle capable of carrying a load with an unladen weight of 3.5 tonnes or less. But always check with the company as maximum tonnages vary.

The premium you are quoted will also depend on the type of use you're putting the van to. Vans used for commercial purposes will, it goes without saying, cost more to insure than a van used for private and leisure use. Camper vans, for instance, are a niche market all of their own.

With the introduction of crewcabs and doublecabs, the definition of a van has been widened somewhat. Typically, a standard van insurance policy will include cover for less than four passengers, but this can be increased with the company's agreement.

Falling within the definition of van are micro-vans, car-derived vans, light vans, panel vans, large vans, pick ups, doublecab and crewcab vans. Most companies also insure vans with open backs for specialist uses such as tippers etc.
