In the United States, only when a new territory in the then undeveloped west was formally defined and incorporated into the Union as a State, were women finally permitted to vote in those states only. This right still was not provided to the majority of women already residing in the other earlier formed states. The reasoning in the new frontier territories was inlight of a scarce total population of people, each person was relied upon to perform all the needed work tasks. Women then had to through necessity be able do all the same tasks as their male counterparts. Women were understood as equals. All this was occurring during the 1870's and 1880's.
All this time Woman's rights groups were actively pursuing suffrage and equal rights. Sometimes these efforts to change the laws, took various means to make the entire population aware of the situation. Methods included large public parade-like demonstrations were thousands of mostly females, marched in the streets with large banners and signs. The government elected officials and in the court system were also petitioned continuously by American women.

It was not till after World War I, that when women had to be a large part of the war effort in the manufacturing industry and other related fields. This was the first time the economy relied prominently on all the citizens working regardless of sex. It also must be stated the effect of women's expanded employment as secretaries, telephone operators etc was required in the quickly developing industrial revolution. Following the end of the war effort, there would not be any return of just a male work force. The Nineteenth Amendment was enacted on August 18, 1920, after ratified by two thirds of the states.
Thus ended forever the perfectly comprised workplace, one where everything was in perfect harmony and balance. Gone forever was the Male Dominance of the Universe, it was mourned by millions!

Because around that era, there was a Liberal Prime Minister named Herbert Asquith. He came up with a notion that women were too temperamentally unsuited to politics and he thought that if men were to give women the right to vote, they would turn on them and help the conservatives. This was based on the idea that rich women, if they were given this privilege, then they would help the conservative gov't. In otherwords, due to women's temper tantrums and hysteria, men believed that woman in a way were callow becuz of their demeanor. Hope this short info helps you.
