In the United Kingdom stamp duty - the tax on land, property and shares transactions - is not charged on residential property purchases up to £125,000. Thereafter it is charged, to the purchaser, at a rate of 1% for properties selling at between £125,001 and £250,000. The rate rises to 3% for sales between £250,001 and £500,000 and to 4% for sales over £500,000. These figures are as of 23 March 2006.

There is no stamp duty charged on transactions up to £150,000 for non-residential land and for residential property transfers in disadvantaged areas.

A stamp duty charge of 0.5% is levied on share transfers.

In the case of land transactions, the tax is now known as Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT). SDLT is charged on lease rents at 1% of the net present value of rent over the lease term to the extent that this exceeds £120,000 (residential) or £150,000 (commercial and disadvantaged areas).
