Humans have many different ways of perceiving representations. In the main, representations for deliberate, explicit communication tend to use one of three modes ofperception, which are also used in our communication with computers.1 Auditory representationis perceived as sound. In human communication, the prime example is spoken language.Other examples include music and Morse code. Computers also handle auditoryrepresentations. The handshake protocol described in Subsection 2.3 involves computerssending sounds down a telephone line.2 Visual representationsare perceived as sight. Examples abound in human communication. Written language, trafficsigns, flags, paintings, and the color of a player’s shirt in a team sport are all examples ofVisual representations to which people assign meaning. Computers can also deal with visualrepresentations. Scanning moves an image from a sheet of paper onto the screen. The mostcommon way of receiving information from computers is through visual representations, either as a screen display or through printed output.3 Tactile representationsare perceived by touch. They are also used by people to convey messages. However, withthe notable exception of Braille, they are less common in human communication as a meansof conveying explicit and precise information. While explicit communication through tactilerepresentation is relatively uncommon between people, it plays a central part in ourinteraction with computers. The most common form of input is via keyboard andMouse and many computer games rely on joysticks. People navigate through virtual realityspaces by means of hand movements detected by sensors in a glove.
