The coaxial cable is the most commonly used transmission media. It is the media that is used in cable TV. There are many advantages as well as the disadvantages of this media.
First and the most important is that the coaxial cable is inexpensive transmission media. It is very easy to install and use. As there are two parallel conductors in this cable, the inner conductor carries the signals while the outer conductors are to protect the inner signal from outer interferences. These outer conductors actually catch the interferences and thus avoid the disturbances in the signals. So the major advantage of the coaxial cables it their ability to resist these external electromagnetic radiations. It is very mush easy to expand the coaxial cable by adding new segments.
Besides of all these advantages, there are some shortcomings that are the causes of not using coaxial cable any more. The basic problem with this media is that, the minor problem in the cable can cause the entire segment to go down. The connectors used for this cable are very much prone to errors. These connectors can fail frequently, thus creating a problem in the entire network. It can carry the signals at the speed of 10 Mbps.
