Turtles love water so make sure they have minimum 40 gallon tank to move around easily. Minimum 1/3rd of the tank should consist of land including rocks as well. The tank also needs UV light, so place it under the lamp. Use filter in the tank this will help you to clean the water 24 hours a day. For more information please click here.

I have a huge red ear. The way i deal with him is, he has two filters running, every week or so i rinse out the filters gently, and when i need to i replace them. I also have a hand held tank cleaner that you manually hand pump and it sucks some of the nasty stuff that collects in the bottom($9.00 pet store) . Then you replace with water that is the same temp. Make sure you have a little heater on your tank so he doesn't get to cold. My turtle is in a big tank 3/4 full with water, he has a turtle ramp that suctions to the side of the tank and floats so he can get out($24.00). When needed like every 2 months i completely empty his tank, scrub his ramp and clean the filters with a tooth brush. He goes in the tub and gets very gently scrubbed only on his shell with a soft tooth brush. Make sure the water is as close to the temp of the tank as you can get while cleaning him, otherwise you will put him in shock. Then i put water back in the tank, again as close as i can get to the temp that it was, and i put a little water treatment stuff in it, and a little water clarifier. I let it sit for a couple of hours and he hangs out in the tub. But make sure there is no soap residue in the tub when you do all this. When i put him back in his tank he usually goes nuts for a few minutes. At night i make sure i turn the light off in his tank. Unless the light is the only way you have to keep the tank a little warm. Also you can get bulbs that emit heat if you don't have a heater.I have found that the big river stones (Walmart like $2.50 a bag) the half dollar size ones are easier to keep clean then the regular little aquarium pebbles just make sure you really clean them and let them soak before you put them in the tank.also I use the bigger ones cuz my turtle was eating a defining the other ones. The lady at the pet store told me that if i want to do less work i can get an under gravel filter, and i will have to clean the tank less often, but it's expensive for my size tank, and kinda loud. Another funny thing is I asked her about chomppers (my turtle) toenails because they are really long, and she said you could clip them, but i am scared I'll hurt him. Your best bet would be to find a little mom and pop pet store and go there, they will usually order what you need and won't sell you things you don't. Plus they will answer all of your questions. Good luck. Email me if you have more questions

Ph 7.0 for most freshwater turtles there are exeptions some like a.snapper like more acidic water and water must be cleaned at least 2times a week unless you have a filter system and make sure you have a uv but sun and rain water are the best
