The Algerian War of Independence lasted from the year 1954 to the year 1962. It was in the year 1954 that the National Liberation Front (FLN) initiated this guerrilla war. What followed was almost a decade full of both urban and rural warfare. Ultimately Algeria emerged victorious and was successful in thrusting France out of the country in the year 1962.

The majority of the 1,025,000 Pieds-Noirs and the 91,000 Harkis (that is, the pro-French Muslim Algerians who served in the French Army) fled to France around the middle of the year1962. These two groups who together made up roughly 10 percent of the total population of Algeria fled the country in a matter of just a few months.

The Algerian War of Independence was a complex conflict and is regarded as among the most important decolonisation wars.
