Is It True Elvis Asked To Be Appointed An FBI Anti-narcotics Agent?

Answer Question

Yes. In December 1970 Elvis wrote a letter to U.S. President Richard Nixon, professing his admiration for the president, and asking that he be appointed a 'Federal Agent at Large' to help combat what he saw as an entrenched drug culture.

Elvis had expressed a desire to meet the present and, accordingly, he was invited to the White House on December 21, 1970. He arrived wearing a dark velvet suit, gold jewellery and large, custom-made sunglasses with the letters 'EP' emblazoned on them.

In the course of the meeting, he presented Nixon with a World War Two-vintage Colt 45 pistol; in return, he received an honorary badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs but was given no real authority to act as an agent of the government.

The photograph of Elvis shaking hands with Nixon is the most requested document in the history of America's National Archives. Presidential aide Bud Krogh later wrote a book about the meeting and a television film ~ 'Elvis Meets Nixon' ~ was made about it in 1997.
