There are several variables that can make a good cup of coffee. The heat of the water is important. You can research coffee makers like Bunn or the higher end manufacturers to see what they say is the best.

Impurities and chemicals added to water effect the taste as well. I recently bought a MR Coffee maker and it came with an additional filter that the heated water goes through before hitting the grounds. It is said to remove most of the chlorine added to tap water. It has changed the flavor of my coffee drastically and is much more smooth.

They type of coffee also makes a difference in the taste. There are so many and then you get into flavors being added to coffees. I don't really like the flavored coffees but I do grind my beans for each pot I make. This seems to add additional flavors.

This is merely a matter of personal opinion, but I love the Cuisinart (sp?) with the grinder on top.  You load the built-in grinder with beans, pour in water, and start immediately, or program to brew in the morning.  Fresh ground coffee makes a big difference in flavor.
