Assuming that your dog is not one of the breeds that look "mangy" when they moult - which can be quite normal for some breeds, then the next most frequent culprit of hair loss would be a hormone imbalance, or maybe an episode of severe stress.
Blood tests and skin scraping at the vet would identify the cause and suggest an appropriate treatment.
