How Many Native Americans Live On The Rosebud Reservation?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Approximately 21,000 members of the Rosebud tribe live on the Rosebud reservation. There are estimated to be only around 25,000 living Rosebud people in total. Interestingly the tribe also includes the dead on its official roll of members. Therefore you will find figures as high as 35,000 which is the result of including dead Rosebud people. The Rosebud Sioux Tribal members are descended from the Sicangu Oyate of the Tetonwan Division of the Sioux Nation.  Sicangu Oyate means 'burnt thighs. The Tribal homelands were reduced in size by a Government Act in 1989. The Rosebud reservation is now just under 6000 square miles in size. The name Rosebud is not a name chosen by the tribe. Stories of its origin vary. Some say the name was taken from Rosebud Creek a tributary of the Little White River, others that it was because of an abundance of wild roses in the area where the tribe traditionally lived.
