The Damned is a popular British punk rock band that was formed in the mid seventies; it introduced the genre of music that was to be later known as Gothic rock. The founding members of the band were Dave Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (bass and guitar), Rat Scabies (drums) and Brian James (guitar and lyrics). The Damned have borrowed from different genres like garage rock and Psychedelic rock as well as the New Romantic genre.
The group has released several albums with the early part of their career being more successful as compared to the later part. The albums released by the group in the eighties are The Black Album (1980), Strawberries (1982), Phantasmagoria (1985), and Anything (1986). The Black Album established the group's reputation as the forerunners of Gothic rock with shades of the New Romantic touch a theme that was to be seen in all their albums that were released in the eighties.
