How Much Fat Should A Person Eat Daily?

Answer Question

Nobody can give a really definitive answer.

It's known that vegetarians are usually healthier than people who eat meat.  A vegetarian's dietary fat intake is usually about 31% of calories, but many think that's probably near the maximum for optimal health.  The UK Dept. Of health recommends that fat shouldn't comprise more than 33% of one's diet (usually no more than 70g a day).

On the other hand, a diet that is less than 15% fat (about 30g per day for most people) is probably bad for most people.  Fat is in itself a vital organ.  It acts as a store for certain vitamins, it insulates the body, it is an incredibly important sheath and insulator around our nerves, and it is part of the chemistry balance of the entire body.  Fat is necessary for optimal brain function and important for healthy skin.

Use this calculator to get a customised recommendation for your maximum daily fat intake.

Instead of worrying about quantity, you might want to think quality.  Make sure most of your fat intake is unprocessed and mostly vegetarian.

A diet exceeding no more than 30-35% of your total calories per day is normal for a person on a 2000 calorie diet. Keep in mind though that monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are best (olive oil, etc.) Try to limit saturated fats in the diet and avoid trans fat at all costs!
