How Do Horses Gather Food?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Horses don't "gather" food like some animals do. Their stomachs are made to be eating roughage (grass or hay) continuously all day. During Winter, food was not gathered that fall. Have your ever seen a horse pawing at the ground when they want something? That's because wild horses survived Winters in snowy climates by pawing the snow away to get to the grass underneath.

Horses don't  "gather food" like squirrels!  You have to take care of them.  Feed them lot's of hay (preferably Timothy and grass hay)  Maybe some oats and carrots are great in the winter.  Also Alfalfa pellets mixed with the oats is good but I only feed mine about one cup a day.  They survive well in the summer on just grass but not too much or they will founder.

Horses dont gather food like squirrels or they dont gather food at all. They get given hay if they live in a bunch of stables or sometimes a carrot for a treat
