The word stator is used as a noun and the meaning the word conveys it is part of a machine that is fixed but the other parts that are surrounding it are rotating. The word is particularly used for the collection of stationary parts that are found in the magnetic circuits located in a machine. The word has its uses in the aeronautics also and it describes the system of stationary airfoils that is found in the compressor of a jet engine.

The word is not very popular in the day-to-day conversation but other derivatives based on the same root are very much in use and you can come across them quite often. On of the words is stationary which conveys the idea of something that is not moving and neither intended to be moved.
