A Tenerife dog is actually a Bichon Fries. It is another name for them and they are exactly the same. Originally the Bichon Fries was bred in the Mediterranean and there were four main categories. These were known as Bichon Tenerife, Bichon Havanais, Bichon Bolognais and Bichon Maltais. It is obvious to see now why some Bichon Fries dogs are known as the Tenerife dog and it is mainly because of where it has originated from.
Mainly the breed developed in Tenerife in Spain after being used by sailors. After that different countries started to notice the breed such as Italy and France. Eventually it became popular in most parts of the world and today it is used mainly as a companion dog. So when you see advertisements for Tenerife dogs they are basically advertisements for the Bichon Fries.
