No you don't require a visa for UAE. You just need to take along the travel documents and the immigration counter at UAE will provide the on spot tourist visa for 14 days.

It depends what you call a short visit. You do not require a travel visa if you wish to spend less than 14 days in UAE, but if you want to stay more than that then you require a visit visa and a sponsor. The validity is up to 90 days. A fee of AED 500 is charged for renewal. Good news for you, if you are visiting UAE first time then your visa is free. Hope you found an answer.

It depends on what you regard as a short visit but would good to carry out enquires in reference to how long you may need to stay in that country without a visa although you may not need one
