I live in the western part of N.C. And I found a little black and white diamond snake and I was wondering what kind it was and if it was harmful?

8.5pt>I really do not like snakes, so I studied much about them so I can avoid them.

8.5pt>Actually there are just six species of venomous snakes in North Carolina compared to thirty-one species of nonvenomous snakes.  They include the 12.0pt>copperhead8.5pt>, 12.0pt>cottonmouth8.5pt>, 12.0pt>timber rattlesnake8.5pt>, 12.0pt>eastern diamondback rattlesnake8.5pt>, and the12.0pt> pigmy rattlesnake8.5pt>.  The remaining local venomous species is the 12.0pt>eastern coral snake.  The8.5pt> eastern diamondback, pigmy rattlesnake, and the coral snake are pretty rare.

8.5pt>The snake you describe is definitely not a coral snake, pigmy rattlesnake, or a copperhead.  If it is definitely black it would not be an eastern diamondback rattler, either, as these snakes have a very large, heavy-bodied, and are brown or grayish with light-centered, yellow-margined, diamond-shaped, dark brown or black blotches. Of the remaining venomous snakes, it could remotely be a dark-phase timber rattler, but you could of course quickly identify this by noting the rattle on the end of its tail.8.5pt>

So what you have is likely a non-venomous species.  Without a picture of it, it sounds like possibly a black rat snake to me.  In NC, the snake species that is most often found in houses and buildings is the Black rat snake.   Maybe you can identify it by its picture from this website.  Remember that even non-venomous snakes will still bite, so be careful handling it.
