According to NASA, sky is blue in the day time because the sunlight hits the molecules and they scatter it in all directions, therefore the blue color of sky is the result of this scattering process. On the other hand, at night the sky looks black because that part of earth is not in front of sun and no light strikes the earth and no scattering process takes place. NASA also argues that if you are on moon and there is no atmosphere then sky will appear as black both in day and night.
