What Are The Functions Of The Skeleton?

Answer Question

16 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Your skeleton functions very much like the frame of a house, providing the strength to support your body and anything it carries. It also provides protection much like a house does, sheltering your internal organs from damage from outside forces. But because your body moves in many more ways than a house, the skeleton also serves as the attachment point for muscles and ligaments. Ligaments act like the hinge on a door, allowing movement in various directions. The muscles provide the power for the movement.
Your skeleton functions best when it is kept strong. Eating foods rich in calcium like salmon, broccoli, milk, beans and peas strengthen your bones. Also, weight-bearing exercises "work" your bones, helping them pull the calcium in and keep it there.
When calcium is depleted from the bones, diseases like osteoporosis can develop. In many cases these are not detected until a bone breaks, because there may be no outward symptoms that the bones are weakening. When bones begin to lose strength, they can thin, or even develop a "Swiss cheese" appearance internally. When bones begin this process, they will not function adequately as support or protection for the rest of your body, and increasing calcium intakes as well as weight-bearing exercises is the usual prescription.

      1.Support
The rigid skeleton forms a frame work for the support of the body.                                It raises the body above the ground.                                                                                 The vertebral column becomes a rigid axis to support the heavy head and to resist the push exercised by the limbs
      2.Protection
It provides protection for delicate vital organs of the body.
The brain is protected by the cranium, eye by the orbit and inner ear by the optic
      3.Muscle attachment
the bones serve as firm and adequate surfaces for attachment of muscles b means of tendons.
      4.movement or Locomotion
      Many bones act as levers.
When muscles pull these levers.they produce movement of the parts such as bring about locomotion.
Movement of the skeleton requires a system of joints and muscle attachment
      5.Production of blood corpuscles
The long bones of vertebrates contain red marrow.
In amphibians, reptiles and birds the bone marrow forms all kinds of corpuscles, white corpuscles are formed in the lymphatic tissue.

Broadly categorizing, the human skeleton provides the functions of support, protection, movement and muscle attachment to the body.

Support: A skeletal support system allows rapid movement, suspends the vital organs, prevents them from crushing each other and maintains the shape of the body, despite vigorous muscle activity.

Protection: Certain delicate and important organs of the body are protected by a casing of bone. The brain in enclosed in the skull, the spinal cord is surrounded by the vertebral column and the heart and lungs are protected by the rib cage. The skeleton protects the organs from distortion and injury that may result from pressure and/or impact. In addition to providing protection of vital organs, the ribcage also takes part in the breathing mechanism.

Movement: In order to produce movement, many bone of the skeleton perform the function of levers. When muscles pull of these levers like bones, movement is produced. The bending of arms is a common example of skeletal movement. The skeleton requires a system of joints and muscles in order to move.

Muscle Attachment: For effective movement to take place, it is important that muscles are securely attached to the skeleton. One end of the muscle must be attached to the part of the skeleton to be moved, while the other must be attached to the part to be held stationary.

There are 4 main functions. Protection - of the organs behind the bones. Shape and Support - provides the structure that gives our body its shape. Movement - the muscles that move our body are connected to our bones which allow us to move. Blood Production - some red and white blood cells are produced by the bone marrow.
