When Did Australia Gain Its Independent?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Independence? Well on 1st January 1901 it became a country, but in a way it still hasn't gained its independence as a referendum to make Australia a republic was rejected in the late 1990's (mainly due to the model offered), and so in many ways it is still under the Queen of England.  Although for most practical purposes she doesn't interfere in the running of the country, but the Governor General can and has done in the past (the Whitlam dismissal 11th November 1975).
