    The first step in improving communication is the awareness and understanding of the principles of communication. Some important principles in improving our communication are:

    1. Try to clarify ideas before communication.
    2. Make sure of the true purpose of each communication.
    3. Take into consideration the actual situation.
    4. Consult with others, when appropriate, in planning communication.
    5. Learn proper terms of address.
    6. Give attention to the basic content of your message as well as to the associated things.
    7. Be simple, open and honest.
    8. Use a positive tone of voice to convey interest.
    9. Avoid impression of haste.
    10. Be an open listener.  Try to listen and understand the other person's point of view.
    11. Avoid professional jargons while talking to laymen.
    12. Encourage questions.
    13. Ask for clarification if non verbal meaning is unclear.
    14. Communicate for tomorrow as well as today.  Try to explain the purpose and aims, what would be the outcomes in the future.
    15. Be sure that your actions support your communication.
    16. Follow up your communication to find out how effective it has been.  
    17. Try to convey something to help the receiver.
    18. Consult with others, when appropriate, in planning communication.
    19. Share personal experiences, and beliefs to establish rapport and trust when ever suitable.
