Unilever has two headquarters, one which is located in Rotterdam and the other in London. However the firm shares the same director and both operate as one single business. This arrangement is very similar to that chosen by Royal Dutch Shell and Reed Elsevier. Unilever's main competitors are Nestlé, Reckitt Benckiser, Procter & Gamble and Mars Incorporated.

The firm came into being in the year 1930 with the merger of Margarine Unie with Lover Brothers. It is largely seen as one of the most reputed manufacturer of consumer durables. Some of its most popular brands are Annapurna, Lipton, Brooke Bond, Knorr, Ben and Jerry's etc. The last census taken in the year 2005 said that its annual turnover was around €39.672 billion. Today it is headed by Patrick Cescau and Antony Burgmans. Presently, it boasts a total of 206 000 employees.
