The directory on NTFS is an exact file storing the references to other records and directories establishing the hierarchical establishment of disk information. The directory file is separated into blocks; each of them contains a file surname, base properties and orientation to the constituent MFT which previously gives the total information on a constituent of the directory. The inner arrangement of the directory is a double tree.

It means that to look for the file with the known name in the linear directory such for instance as for FAT, the in service system should look from side to side all elements of the index until it finds the essential one. The double tree allocates the names of files to create the file search earlier - with the assist of obtaining double answers to the questions about the file place. The double tree is able to give the reply to the query in what group the necessary name is located - above or under the given constituent. We start with such question to the standard element, and each reply narrows the area of look for twice. The files are sorted according to the alphabet, and the reply to the query is approved by the clear way - corresponding of initial mail.
